A message from your Wayne County Prosecutor – Kym Worthy

Twenty years of experience being “Smart on Crime” and Worthy of your support!

I am honored to serve as your Wayne County Prosecutor and welcome your support as I seek an additional term to serve ALL people of Wayne County. My administration has been committed to being smart on crime, and not just “tough on crime,” which is a good media talking point but disregards those many unique factors that accompany each and every issue that comes before my office.

We have demonstrated and will continue to take action to be smart on crime while others pander to the media, politics or the polls. We take each case seriously and work to ensure that one-time mistakes whether a juvenile issue, mental illness or an act of desperation does not begin a lifetime of involvement with the criminal justice system.

At the same time, we will not tolerate lawlessness in Wayne County and working with all stakeholders we have reduced crime in the City of Detroit and Wayne County while other major cities have seen dramatic spikes – please consider supporting our continued efforts to be smart on crime in Wayne County!

My office pledges to continue to fight for justice for all – the accused, the police and the greater community. I pledge to continue holding criminals and law enforcement officers alike accountable for their actions. Together we have and continue to improve relations between law enforcement and our community. This work continues and I ask for your support as we move forward to be smart on crime.

Please see some highlights of what we have been able to achieve since I was elected to office over two decades ago to serve:

Wrongful Convictions: I launched the first Conviction Integrity Unit in the state of Michigan. This Unit ensures that new claims of innocence are investigated and defendants that are wrongly convicted are exonerated and appropriately compensated. Nearly 2,000 people have had their lives changed and restored under this critically important program.

Elder Abuse: More than 73,000 older adults in Michigan are victims of elder abuse. I created Wayne County’s first Elder Abuse Unit to help protect one of our state’s most vulnerable populations. This Unit is solely devoted to prosecuting crimes targeting elderly persons, such as crimes in nursing homes or adult foster care facilities.

Youth Programs: Long before it was fashionable, at a time when it was often subject to criticism, I developed and advanced alternatives to charging and rehabilitative programs. Over the years our Diversion programs have successfully provided thousands of adults and juveniles an opportunity to obtain a fair and sensible alternative to a felony record.

Mental illness: This is a major issue affecting nearly every family in Wayne County. Because they have this condition through no fault of their own, I have been a tireless longtime advocate for treating, rather than incarcerating a person, adult or juvenile. More must be done to provide treatment for mental illness in Wayne County. Please join me in this important effort to bolster mental health diversion programs.

Women’s Rights: Two of the proudest moments of my life were the induction to the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame and being featured in the Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary, I Am Evidence, that highlighted the work of my office in locating and testing the 11,341 sexual assault kits we found abandoned in a Detroit Police Department warehouse. This program led to convictions, justice and closure for many women in Wayne County.

Active and Involved: In addition to running one of the busiest Prosecutor’s Offices in the country, I have served with my time and talent as:

  • Board member of the Joyful Heart Foundation
  • Chair of the Michigan Chapter of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. 
  • Board of Directors of the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys of Michigan.
